Some cloth should remain mixed or unresolved while it is being documented. A useful record can be specific about what is visible without pretending to know what is not.
Build a small record
Write down fibre if known, scale, edge behaviour, repeat, reverse, seam and any catalogue wording. Those observations are more durable than a confident but unsupported technique label.
- Photograph front and reverse
- Record the material
- Keep the source path
Use an unresolved grade
The field index includes unresolved as a real evidence state. It keeps a reader moving toward better evidence instead of rewarding the first plausible resemblance.
- List possible families
- Say what would confirm one
- Do not force a single answer
